"Bürgerstiftungen sind eine einzigartige Erfolgsgeschichte", erklärt die Bundesministerin für Familie, Senioren, Frauen und Jugend, Ursula von der Leyen, anlässlich des Tages der Bürgerstiftungen. "Gut zehn Jahre nach der Gründung der ersten Bürgerstiftung in Deutschland engagieren sich inzwischen schon 13.000 Bürgerinnen und Bürger in einer Bürgerstiftung. Sie alle verbindet das gleiche:
Sie helfen Menschen, die Hilfe benötigen. Sie setzen sich ein für andere. Sie haben offene Augen für die Not anderer. Früher war die Familie oft der letzte Rettungsanker, doch die klassische Großfamilie gibt es kaum noch. Aber die Idee der Familie - Hilfe, Solidarität und Zusammenhalt weiterzugeben - das ist zeitlos", so Ursula von der Leyen.
In Bürgerstiftungen engagieren sich Bürgerinnen und Bürger gemeinschaftlich und gezielt für ihr direktes Lebensumfeld. Die meisten Stiftungen haben die Förderung von Kindern und Jugendlichen als Schwerpunkt, an zweiter und dritter Stelle folgen soziale und generationenübergreifende Projekte. Der Bundesverband Deutscher Stiftungen hat inzwischen 166 Bürgerstiftungen mit seinem Gütesiegel ausgezeichnet. Das aktuelle Bürgerstiftungskapital beträgt 100 Millionen Euro, seit 2002 haben die Stiftungen ihre Projekte mit insgesamt rund 25 Millionen Euro gefördert. Alle Bürgerstifterinnen und -stifter zusammen haben allein im vergangen Jahr mehr als 260.000 ehrenamtliche Arbeitsstunden geleistet.
Bei vielen Bürgerstiftungen steht das Thema Familie im Vordergrund: sei es in Lesepatenschaften, der Übernahme von Kosten für Unterrichtsmaterial und Klassenausflüge für sozial schwächere Familien oder der Betreuung für Kinder in der Mittagszeit. Die Bürgerstiftung Berlin unterstützt zum Beispiel den integrativen Familiensport, indem sie die Trainer einer Rollstuhl-Basketballgruppe und einer Gruppe von Eltern behinderter Kinder finanziert. Familien mit Migrationshintergrund und ihre Sprachkompetenzen stehen im Zentrum des Projekts "Family Literacy" der Bürgerstiftung Hamburg. Hier drücken Eltern und Kinder gemeinsam die Schulbank, um ihre Deutsch-Kenntnisse zu verbessern.
Um die Rahmenbedingungen für Stiftungen zu stärken, fördert das Bundesfamilienministerium im Rahmen der Initiative "ZivilEngagement Miteinander - Füreinander" die Initiative Bürgerstiftungen als unabhängiges Kompetenzzentrum. Ziel ist es, die Zahl der Bürgerstiftungen insbesondere auch in Städten mit mehr als 100.000 Einwohnern deutlich zu steigern, das Kapital von Bürgerstiftungen weiter zu erhöhen und die Kooperation mit Partnern und Unterstützern auszubauen. Förderer der Initiative Bürgerstiftungen sind auch die Robert Bosch Stiftung, die Breuninger Stiftung, die Körber-Stiftung sowie die Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.
